Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker across Colorado

When Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker comes to a theatre near you, it brings nearly 40 world-class dancers, more than 200 dazzling costumes created in St. Petersburg, Russia, and beautiful backdrops painted by Russian artisans. It also comes with towering puppets, stunning props, and busloads of holiday magic.

Did you know, though, that the tour also brings a deep history of hard work, passion, and above all a commitment to the artistic integrity at the very core of every performance?

Russian ballet dancers are known for their focused practice and the sense of duty they bring to the ballet art form. They train from very young ages and with unmatched dedication. Think about going to ballet class every day… for hours! Above are some photos from one of the earliest Nutcracker performances in Europe in the late 19th Century, and a ballet class taking place in a Russian village during World War II in the 1940s.

The Moscow Ballet company jeté’ed onto American soil in 1993. Since then, the company has continued to grow, while always maintaining its roots in the classical world of ballet. Some of the characters you may recognize – the Arabian variation couple, the Kissy Doll with her beautiful ribbon candy tutu, and the iconic Dove of Peace (exclusive to Moscow Ballet) – have undergone beautiful transformations. You’ll also recognize changes in the backdrops as we look back at older images of the show.

2019 is the company’s 27th annual tour of the United States and Canada and the dancers will see audiences in more than 150 cities in November and December. We couldn’t do this without our dedicated patrons, and we are beyond delighted to welcome Girl Scouts just like you to performances every year. Thank you for joining us!
