Looking for an unforgettable adventure for your Girl Scout troop? Look no further than Savannah, Georgia, and nearby Tybee Island! This charming Southern city, rich in history and culture, paired with the laid-back beach vibes of Tybee, offers the perfect blend of outdoor exploration, historical discovery, and culinary delights. Whether your troop wants to connect to Girl Scouting roots, explore nature, or try Southern cuisine, Savannah and Tybee Island have something for everyone.
Start your journey by visiting Juliette Gordon Low’s Birthplace and First Girl Scout Headquarters in Savannah. This historic home where the founder of Girl Scouts, Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low, established the organization offers an engaging experience where your troop can explore the place where it all began. Through interactive exhibits, troops can learn about Daisy’s life and the founding of Girl Scouts. There’s something truly special about walking through the very spaces that inspired generations of girls to make the world a better place.
After connecting with the history of Girl Scouts, head over to Tybee Island for some outdoor fun. For Girl Scouts from landlocked states, the Tybee Beach Ecology Program with Dr. Joe, a retired marine scientist, is a must-do. From crabs to sand dollars, there’s so much to discover, and Dr. Joe provides all the necessary tools for the adventure. Troops will experience the thrill of finding marine life and gain a deeper understanding of coastal ecosystems. The program includes a “touch tank” where participants can safely interact with some creatures.
While on Tybee Island, be sure to visit the Tybee Island Lighthouse. This iconic lighthouse offers both a fun challenge and a great educational opportunity. Your Girl Scouts can climb the steep, winding staircase to the top, where they’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the island and coastline. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn about the lighthouse’s history and its role in guiding ships to safety.
No trip to Savannah is complete without indulging in its Southern cuisine. After a day of exploring Tybee Island, head to The Crab Shack for a laid-back dining experience. This bayou-style restaurant is perfect for groups, offering both indoor and outdoor seating. You’ll find that the tables come with built-in trash cans for shells and scraps, adding a fun and interactive element to the meal. Your troop will love feeding small alligators outside (for a small fee) and soaking in the island atmosphere. Arrive early, as this popular spot tends to get crowded later in the day.
One must-try spot is Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room, a beloved Southern eatery known for its family-style dining. Here, your troop can enjoy classic comfort foods like fried chicken, cornbread, and collard greens while bonding over delicious food. The experience feels like dining at a friend’s house, where everyone sits together at large tables and shares dishes, creating a sense of community and togetherness.

For dessert, treat your troop to Savannah Square Pops, a quirky popsicle shop where your troop can create their own frozen treats using fresh, local ingredients. It’s a hands-on way to enjoy a sweet snack and experience the flavors of the region. If your troop is still craving more sweets, head to Leopold’s Ice Cream, a local favorite for old-fashioned sundaes and malts. After a busy day of sightseeing, there’s no better way to cool down than with a scoop of rich, creamy ice cream.
If your Girl Scouts enjoy history, make time to visit Wormsloe Historic Site, where you can stroll down an iconic oak-lined path leading to an 1800s plantation. The grounds are peaceful and picturesque, perfect for exploring and learning about Georgia’s colonial history. It’s an immersive experience that brings history to life and offers plenty of space for your troop to enjoy the outdoors.
For those interested in a bit of mystery, the Andrew Low House is a great spot to explore Savannah’s spooky side. The house is home to a fascinating collection of antiques and artifacts, but it’s also rumored to be haunted. While we didn’t take the ghost tour, the old dolls in the children’s playroom were enough to give some of our girls the chills! For others, it was a great chance to learn about the city’s past. The beautifully maintained garden is also an ideal place for a group photo.
To cap off your visit, consider a relaxing ride on the Savannah Belles Ferry. This free ferry offers a peaceful way to view the city from the water, especially at sunset. It’s a calming break from a day of exploring, and your troop will enjoy seeing Savannah’s skyline from a different perspective. If your troop loves wildlife, don’t miss the chance to book a Dolphin Tour. The shallow, warm waters around Tybee Island are perfect for spotting playful dolphins and other marine life.

With so much to offer, Savannah and Tybee Island are perfect destinations for Girl Scout troops looking for adventure, history, and fun. Whether your troop is exploring the roots of the Girl Scouts, discovering marine life on the beach, or sampling Southern treats, this trip will provide experiences that will inspire and create lasting memories.
